Newlyweds die in Islamabad gas cylinder explosion after wedding night

(MENAFN) A tragic gas cylinder blast in Islamabad claimed the lives of a bride and groom just one day after their wedding, police confirmed.

The explosion, which occurred at 07:00 local time on Sunday, also killed six other relatives and guests who had stayed overnight at the house. More than a dozen others were injured as the roof collapsed and walls were blown apart, leaving rubble, broken furniture, and concrete slabs scattered across the site. Rescue teams carried survivors out on stretchers after pulling them from beneath the debris.

Emergency officials said the blast was caused by a gas leak that filled the room before igniting. The force of the explosion damaged three neighboring houses as well.

Pakistan’s Senate chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani described the tragedy as “a heart-wrenching incident that turned celebrations into mourning.”

Hanif Masih, the groom’s father, explained that his son had married the previous day and was sleeping at the house with his wife, relatives, and guests when the disaster struck. He said the family went to bed around 03:00 local time and awoke to devastation. Masih lost his son, daughter-in-law, wife, and sister-in-law in the blast.

Police cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. Forensic teams in protective suits examined the wreckage, while Deputy Police Commissioner Sahibzada Yousaf told local media that sniffer dogs and advanced equipment were used to ensure all victims were recovered.
