Pakistan’s devastating floods destroy entire village

(MENAFN) In northern Pakistan, the village of Bishnoi, once known for its scenic beauty and a river flowing calmly through it, was swept away by sudden floods on the morning of Friday, 15 August.

Locals described a torrent of water rushing through the village, “bringing huge rocks with it and crushing buildings in its path, destroying the entire village.” When journalists visited the area afterward, the landscape was littered with massive stones, concrete blocks, and uprooted trees. Rescue workers and villagers were seen clearing debris with small tools in the absence of heavy machinery.

“There is a house under every stone. People try to look under these rocks to see if they can find someone,” said local resident Israr Khan. “The houses are buried under the ground.”

Across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the floods and heavy rains that began Thursday night have killed at least 314 people and injured 156. Buner district, home to Bishnoi, suffered the highest casualties, with 217 deaths reported by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.

Residents recounted harrowing losses, including families caught in a house preparing for a wedding. Bishnoi, which had around 80 to 90 households, primarily engaged in farming, has seen roughly 50 percent of its homes completely destroyed, with the remainder rendered uninhabitable.
