Pakistani man body gets found after being missing for twenty-eight years

(MENAFN) In the remote, mountainous area of Kohistan in Pakistan, the body of a man who had been missing for 28 years was recently uncovered in a melting glacier.

A shepherd happened upon the remarkably well-preserved remains, with clothing still intact, in Lady Valley, located in the eastern part of the country.

An ID card found alongside the body identified the man as Naseeruddin. Authorities traced the identity back to a man who disappeared in June 1997 after falling into a glacier crevice during a snowstorm.

The region has experienced reduced snowfall in recent years, leading to glaciers being exposed to direct sunlight and melting at an accelerated pace. Experts note that this discovery highlights how climate change is speeding up glacier melt.

"What I saw was unbelievable," said Omar Khan, the shepherd who found the body. "The body was intact. The clothes were not even torn."

Once police confirmed the identity as Naseeruddin, local residents began providing additional information, according to Mr. Khan.

Naseeruddin had a wife and two children. On the day of his disappearance, he was traveling on horseback with his brother, Kathiruddin. Police mentioned that a family dispute had forced them to leave their home.

Kathiruddin explained that they arrived in the valley that morning, and around midday, his brother entered a cave but did not come back. Despite searching inside the cave and seeking help from others nearby, they were unable to locate him at the time.

Prof. Muhammad Bilal, head of the Department of Environment at Comsats University Islamabad, explained that when a human body falls into a glacier, the extreme cold quickly freezes it, halting decomposition.

The body then becomes naturally mummified due to the absence of moisture and oxygen within the glacier.
